Learning from the Past: Celebrity Substance Use
In our society, many of us tend to look up to celebrities and view them as role models. The lives of these celebrities are generally not private, which allows the public to get a glimpse into their successes but also witness their struggles and difficulties. With that being said, substance use and addictions are common issues that celebrities face. There are a number of reasons why celebrities struggle with addictions and their mental health. The pressures of fame can take their toll on them, and not having any privacy can be extremely anxiety-provoking. On a positive note, we are able to analyze how these celebrities handle their addictions, while learning from their mistakes but also taking note of their accomplishments to overcome them.
There are a number of celebrities who have faced addictions and substance use disorder, who are now setting an example for how to overcome these difficulties. Frequently, these celebrities are actors and musicians.
One example of an incredible success story is that of Robert Downey Jr. For many years, he had battled an addiction to heroin and cocaine. While this was not an easy battle to fight, Downey overcame his issues and went on to become an extremely highly paid and successful actor.
Another successful actor who overcame his addictions is Bradley Cooper. During his younger years, he battled an alcohol addiction. This caused him to exhibit dangerous behaviors, culminating in him smashing his head on concrete. Cooper realized he must change his lifestyle, or he could face serious health issues – and even death. In 2004, Cooper became sober and went on to have an extremely successful acting career.
There are a number of key lessons that can be learned from these celebrities who battle addiction. For example, celebrities have proven that rehabilitation and long-term treatment can play a key role in helping someone overcome their addictions. As referenced above, Robert Downey Jr had battled addiction, yet he was able to overcome it through his long-term rehab stay.
Rapper Eminem’s story is another important example that highlights the benefits of rehab. Eminem has been sober for 17 years, and he credits this achievement to the therapy he has been consistently receiving.
It is important to note that some of the lessons we learn from celebrities are not all positive success stories. For example, addiction can be a chronic disease, responsible for relapses which can even be fatal. Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman had been battling addiction since his early 20s and was sober for over 20 years. Unfortunately, he relapsed and eventually died from his addictions. While this death could have been prevented, it highlights the importance of recognizing that relapsing can happen and must be taken seriously.
Mental health and addiction are often related, as those with poor mental health often develop addictions. With that being said, it is key to treat simultaneously the addiction and mental health issues they coincide with it. A lesson to be learned from this would that of Nirvana front-man Kurt Cobain. With the release of Nirvana’s album “Nevermind” in 1991, Cobain and Nirvana became extremely successful. This sudden fame was hard on Kurt, as it presented new pressures and struggles. Unfortunately, at only 27 years old, Kurt died by suicide. We can learn from this – Kurt was suffering with suicidal tendencies and depression; however, the only focus of his treatment was on his heroin addiction. Therefore, we recognize that treating both mental health issues and addiction issues are key to a successful recovery. Had Cobain received proper mental health treatment, he may have still been with us today.
