One of the most effective treatment methods for opioid use disorder is the administering of Methadone. Our Methadone program allows our patients to receive potentially life-saving treatment in a safe and welcoming environment. You may be wondering what exactly Methadone maintenance is – let’s explain.
Methadone is an opioid, similar to opium or heroin. In fact, Methadone maintenance treatment has been treating those with opioid addictions since the 1950s. By receiving Methadone, a patient who is addicted to opioids will see a withdrawal in their symptoms, and therefore have less cravings for the opioids.
While Methadone can be addictive, there is a very significant difference between using Methadone as compared to other drugs like heroin. When administered Methadone, the patient is in an environment that is safe and secure – under medical supervision. Additionally, the World Health Organization has even included Methadone on their list of essential medicines, with regards to how it can treat opioid dependence.
