The Importance of Wellness Services in Addiction Treatment

Victory Recovery Partners is a network of addiction and recovery centers on Long Island, New York. By offering total and complete care under one roof (such as behavioral health, MAT, psychiatric, and wellness services), we ensure that our patients are receiving proper and effective care.

The importance of wellness services in treating one’s addiction should be recognized. At Victory, our providers provide our patients with physical exams. Offered at all five Victory locations, physical exams form one of the key elements of one’s psychiatric evaluation upon entering our addiction/recovery program.

Physical exams are key to ensuring proper patient treatment and care. These exams allow your provider to assess your current state of health, along with the effects that addiction is having on your body. Physical exams also can allow a provider to detect any co-occurring conditions affecting your health. Our patients who enroll in our programs, such as our IOP program, will have a complete physical exam as a part of their initial psychiatric evaluation. It’s quick and convenient to receive a physical. It takes less than an hour to complete, and as explained above, they are offered at all our locations.

The physical exams start with checking your vital signs. This includes your temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate, and reflexes. In addition to this, the physician will listen to your heart and lungs with a stethoscope. By doing do, the provider will be able to see if you have an infection or other disease. After that, your body will be fully examined – such as the condition of your eyes, throat, teeth, skin, hair, nails and joints. Other parts of your health that would be examined and assessed include how well you move, if you have problems with your speech or balancing, your level of alertness, if you have tremors or rashes, and if you are showing signs of mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety.

Upon completion of your physical exam, the provider takes blood and urine samples which are sent to a lab for testing. This will alert the provider to any conditions, such as a raised blood sugar level, which could indicate health issues such as diabetes. Toxicology tests will also be conducted to see if there are harmful substances in your body.

Once we receive and review the results of your physical exam and lab results, we will review these results with the patient. By going through this process with our patients, we ensure that they will be on the best possible track to recovery. Physical exams allow us to see if there are any other conditions that could be affecting your ability to control and manage your addiction – so it is crucial that patients receive these exams and lab tests.
